Are musicians who play ragtime fast showing disrespect to Scott Joplin?

June 2, 2010 - 10:00 pm 4 Comments

He always wrote "play slowly"
Edit,
Barca,
I guess I got the idea from the sheet music that Joplin published.

Every composer has their own style that they use. As a music major and after deep study of numerous composers many broke rules and tend to spoof other musicians. You really can’t say playing ragtime fast is disrespect, it’s more like being unique and giving it a personal flair

Was Michael Jackson really a more significant musician than Scott Joplin or Louis Armstrong?

May 31, 2010 - 6:53 am 9 Comments

In all the hype over MJ’s death, isn’t publicity prevailing over real history – and judgment? Seems to me that for most people history only begins in their own adolescence. The cult of celebrity above reality?

One man’s judgment is another man’s publicity. The wheels of time grind for centuries before significant people and events are sorted out. Even then many of the significant are lost only to be "discovered" anew.

What proves to be significant for each of us is trapped in our personal dance. Michael Jackson died. Let the dead bury their dead. The kid sure could dance.

Where can I find the complete works of Scott Joplin actually played by Scott Joplin?

May 25, 2010 - 5:54 pm 1 Comment

I know that recordings exist, but I can only find modern pianist interpretations on Amazon. I have a Very Best of CD on which it is definitely Joplin playing, but I would like the entire works.

Very few recordings exist, and they’re obscure. I’d try shopping some good used record stores. You’d do better if you call them on the phone instead of trying to do it all online. There are very few in my area (near Washington, DC) but there should be plenty in New York, Chicago, and the Los Angeles area. There are also a few good ones in the Denver area, the one I’m familiar with is called "Black and Read," they’re at 80th and Wadsworth.

There may also be some Jazz Clubs out there (groups of enthusiasts, not music venues) that can help you find what you want.

Anyone know any pieces similar to Scott Joplin’s Bethena?

May 22, 2010 - 6:36 am 1 Comment

I played Bethena by Scott Joplin for a competition and I absolutely love it. Does anyone know any ragtime pieces that are similar to it?

Are you familiar with You Tube?: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=bethena+scott+joplin&search_type=&aq=2&oq=bethen

I had never heard nor heard of this piece by Scott Joplin: kinda nice.

The piece I was going to recommend as being similar to "Bethena", was Axel Christensen’s "Nighty Night!"; which I have the sheet music for, and use to play.

But unfortunately, the only thing I could find on the Internet by Chrstensen to which you could listen to, is his "Progressive Rag".

On this link, skip down to the second file – the first, it’s notated, is "broken": http://www.ragtimepiano.ca/rags/review4.htm

What is your favorite Scott Joplin piece?

May 19, 2010 - 6:47 am 4 Comments

I just got a book of Scott Joplin…and I’m wondering which one I should learn. I’ve already learned Maple Leaf Rag and the Entertainer.

Oh and for the musically deprived…Scott Joplin is a ragtime pianist.
A note to the musically deprived: he was also a great composer =]

Joplin wrote a lot of music, and there is not a bad piece in the lot. It is hard to choose a favorite. He wrote 2 operas, one of which was never performed before his death. This opera, Treemonisha, has a song in it where her adoptive parents tell Tremonisha about how they found and adopted her. This is my favorite. I hope you all get a chance to hear more of his music.
His works were not only used in the score of "The Sting", but also were featured in another period movie, "Ragtime". Each of those has some of his great pieces included.
Is your whole book just Joplin and his works? All of them? Where did you get it?
Oh, you should tell the musically deprived that he was not just a pianist, he was a great composer.

Gladiolus Rag — Scott Joplin

May 19, 2010 - 5:40 am 2 Comments

I’ve been meaning to record this tune for a while now…the recording isn’t PERFECT (especially the last bit), but I consider it to be a pretty decent runthrough overall. Considering how many repeats there are in the song, it’s as good as its going to get.

Comments are appreciated!
