Question about the B section of Joplin’s ‘Maple Leaf rag’.?

June 2, 2010 - 10:00 pm 2 Comments

Hey everyone :)
You know the second section of Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, which is played before the Trio; is the right hand to be played an octave higher for the first few bars? If you listen to this recording of it (Joplin actually playing it)

It sounds a lot higher than what my score tells me to play, and I actually think it’ sounds better like that.

usually musical scores either attach the higher notes to an octave lower (for an option of either) or leave them out completely, especially on easier beginner scores or band instruments. however, for an advanced musician, the only reason I could think of that it’d be written lower is if either the notation couldn’t go that high (too confusing) or if they accidentally left an "8va" or "15ma" out. I agree that it sounds waaaay better high, though! good luck.

maple leaf rag?

im trying to learn the maple leaf rag piano piece, but i’m having alittle trouble learning it, does anyone know a direct link to a video of the mpale leaf rag being played? or maybe even a step by step video on youtube, anything helps :]

You haven’t told us the nature of your trouble. But I will say what piano teachers *always* say:

"Practice slowly", and "hands seperately."

First master the left hand stride — until it becomes nearly automatic. Then slowly add the right hand. Once you start to "feel" that syncopation, it will start to get easier.

I love ragtime.

where can i find an easier version of maple leaf rag for the piano?
kind of an intermediate version. g major is easy peazy.

Check out this website. It has Maple Leaf Rag available in 4 different levels of difficulty and you can preview the sheet music and also listen to the different versions online. You can immediately download and print the score on your printer. If you want it in G they also have help with transposing.

Maple Leaf Rag – HonkyTonk Piano

May 19, 2010 - 5:40 am 25 Comments

“Maple Leaf Rag” written by “Scott Joplin(1868-1917)”.

The music of such a style is called “Ragtime Piano” or “Honky Tonk Piano”.

The original sheet of music is written with straight 4/4 beats, but it is often played in shuffle-style(Triplet).

Also Keith Emerson, Andre Previn, Toshiko Akiyoshi and many other players love this title and recording.

Emerson and Previn play straight-style, Akiyoshi plays shuffle-style

I played shuffle-style. When I took this video, the piano of my studio was out of an interval because I did not tune it. However, the sound was suitable for a honky-tonk piano.

Enjoy!
