The summers are beautiful in Calgary, especially, with the tricking sound of a pond or waterfall. Ponds and Waterfalls seem to be the biggest trend in Calgary these days. With the Calgary boom as of the last few years, it seems that everyone and their dog want a waterfall or a pond to enjoy for themselves.
That my friends, is good. A pond or waterfall can add hugely to your property value
When looking at this type of a decision, there are a few things that you would want to take into consideration
The first thing you should think about is your what you want. Personality and lifestyle are two important things. Do you have kids? Pets? This can be important in determining if a pond less waterfall or a pond is right for you in Calgary
Next issue is maintenance. There are not a lot of maintenance companies in Calgary, so you will most likely be maintaining your pond or waterfall yourself. I am a pond builder in the Calgary area, we build low maintenance ponds and waterfalls, not no maintenance.
In regards to ponds, they require cleaning once a year. Larger ponds have a bigger ecosystem, so there is a point in which a pond becomes self sustainable. A good pond clean out typically takes a couple of hours.
The idea here is to pump out the old water, clean out the pond bottom with perhaps a pressure washer and then rinse and repeat until you have a clean pond.
Once your pond is clean, there are many natural microbes you can add that will help with the cleaning of your pond.
In terms of the winter. Most people in Calgary will invest in buying a small heater for their fish. The point of the heater is to keep a hole in the ice to allow poisonous gases to escape. Believe it or not, it isn’t the cold that kills fish, it is many time the icing over of the pond and the trapped gases that kill them. Again, the bigger your pond, the less likely this is going to happen.
In regards to pond less waterfall maintenance, it is really easy. Many in Calgary leave their waterfall turned on for the winter, as a waterfall in Calgary in the winter looks amazing iced over. Beware that it doesn’t get too cold or your pump could freeze.
If things get too cold for your pond less waterfall make sure that you take your pump in for the winter. All that has to be done is to put your pump is a bucket of water in a frost free location.
Lastly a few other small issues a person in Calgary would want to consider when deciding on a pond or waterfall would be electricity costs. A pond / waterfall pump can be anywhere in the neighborhood of $30 – $50 per month in operating costs for a typical Calgary home. This isn’t too bad, but can add up. Not all Calgary people are rich!
Lastly, no pond or waterfall in Calgary is complete without plants. You must ask, what colors will work best for my waterfall? When do you want blooms? Are you going to try and overwinter your plants? Or are you going to bring them in for the winter?
Anyways, just some food for thought for any Calgary person wishing to install a pond or a waterfall, good luck with all of your water gardening endeavors.
